Mardin

Clemens von Wedemeyer

Mardin, which is located on the side of a mountain, is one of the oldest cities of north Mesopotamia, and commands magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.

Endowed with an archaeological, ethnographic, architectural, historical and visual richness, Mardin is one of those poetic cities of Southeastern Anatolia which make visitors feel as though time has stood still for them.

Archaeological excavations and researches conducted in the area indicate that Mardin and its environs first saw human settlement in 4500 BC. As such, the area is an outstanding open air museum, containing a mix of remains from many different civilisations, including the Subaris, Hurris, Sumers, Akads, Mittanis, Hittites, Assyrians, Schytians, Babylonians, Persians, Macedonians, Abgars, Romans, Arabians, Seljuk Turks, Artuklus and Ottomans.
